According to Malaysian officials, wide-ranged floods caused by
downpours and strong winds hit about 80 percent of Penang state. At least 2,000
people had been evacuated.
Floodwater had risen to 3-
4 metres in many areas and more rains were
expected.
Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi instructed the
National Security Council to work with police and military forces to help flood
victims after a request for assistance from Penang.
Hundreds of trees were toppled and roads were submerged, leaving many
areas isolated.
At least two people had been killed, Malaysian news agency Bernama
reported.
