(HBO) – Before the year of 2010, the people of Bao Hieu Commune (Yen Thuy) had developed their economy mainly based on agricultural production. Therefore, the people's life was so difficult, the income per capita only reached about 10 million per person per year, the percentage of poor households accounted for nearly 50%. According to that fact, some households have moved to plant citrus trees, and then it has brought positive signals. Up to now, the commune has expanded the citrus area to over 100 hectares with 35 households participating.

We came to the family of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuan in Doi 2 Village, the pioneer planting citrus in the area. At present, the garden area of Mr. Tuan's family is expanded to over 17 hectares, of which 7 hectares are in the harvest period. Major citrus fruits are Canh Orange, V2 Orange, many kinds of grapefruit, etc. In the season of 2016-2017, Tuan's family sold 70 tonnes of oranges to the market at the average price of 20,000 dongs per kg, 10,000 grapefruit with the price from 14,000 to 20,000 dongs per one. After deducting all the expenses, Mr. Tuan earned over 2 billion. Mr. Tuan also creates regular jobs for 15 laborers with an income of 4- 5 million VND / person depending on the tasks.

Sharing with us, Mr. Tuan said: "Bao Hieu is a flat land with suitable climate and soil for citrus planting. In addition, the Ho Chi Minh axis road runs through the commune to create favorable conditions for traders to buy and transport goods easily. Therefore, my family has boldly planted citrus fruit; so far this has brought some success.”

At present, many households in the area of Bao Hieu commune have improved the area of mixed orchards with citrus fruits such as Canh orange, V2 orange, Tan Lac red grapefruit ... Up to now, the whole commune has expanded the area of citrus to about 105 hectares, of which, 50 hectares are in harvest period. Some households have large area of planting, located in Doi 2 village, such as Nguyen Van Tung's family (4 ha), Tran Van Luu (3 ha). If there is a good care and favorable climate, each hectare can get the average income from 500-700 million dongs.

In order to create conditions for supporting people to develop the citrus planting model effectively, Bao Hieu commune has coordinated with functional agencies to organize 2-3 technical training sessions, transferring technology science and coordinating with the Bank of Society and Welfare, Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development to provide preferential loans for more than 30 households in the area.

Mr. Bui Xuan Thuy, Vice Chairman of Ba Hieu Commune People's Committee, said that: thanks to the development of planting citrus, in 2017, the per capita income of the whole commune reached 20,6 million dongs per person, the proportion of poor households reduced to 29.54%. Currently, the commune authorities continue to propagate and mobilize people to promote citrus planting to increase their income. In addition, in order to create conditions for the households to develop effectively, the commune has set up an Agricultural Cooperative 1 with the purpose of connecting the production with VietGap standards, linking the market for the product output. By that, the quality of the products made by people are improved, the product yield and output are stable.
