(HBO) – Members of the Duong Nam agricultural, forestry services cooperative in Phu Thanh commune, Lac Thuy district, Hoa Binh province are now busy with cultivating its orange areas that are likely to produce abundant crops this year. The oranges grown by Duong Nam cooperative are renowned for their signature flavour and sweet taste, helping them gain a strong foothold in the market in recent years.

A leader of Duong Nam cooperative in Phu Thanh commune, Lac Thuy district, discusses with a cooperative member about orange farming techniques to ensure the fruit’s safety.

The cooperative was founded in June, 2017,with Duong Ngoc Chuc as the director. Its members have since joined hands to grow high-quality and high-value agricultural products on an area of 13 hectares, including eight hectares of orange, four hectares of grapefruit and one hectare of tea.

The cooperative believes the product quality and consumers’ confidence are two factors driving its sustainable development. That is why its members have been using safe and clean practices in cultivating citrus fruit trees, particularly orange, with restricted use of pesticides. To improve the orange’s yield, the cooperative has regularly fertilised the trees with soybeans and used biopesticides like ginger, garlic and chilli.

Last year, the cooperative produced 100 tonnes of safe orange and purchased another 600 tonnes to supply to Hanoi and major supermarket chains such as BigC and Lotte. Its revenue exceeded 4 billion VND and its members earned 5 – 6 million VND on average per person per month.

It has been honoured as an outstanding organisation by the provincial Cooperative Alliance./.
