The country has 23 provinces boasting potential for reservoir fishery development, with 1,250 reservoirs with aquaculture activities, and 13 others with a combined area of over 5,000 hectares. In the past nine months of this year, the output of aquaculture on reservoirs reached more than 36,400 tonnes.

Currently, there are still many difficulties and obstacles in developing reservoir fisheries, including dissemination work, and ineffective registration guidance of some local authorities, and the absence of land/water surface lease contracts.

Speaking at the conference, Su said that Hoa Binh has a favourable geographical location adjacent to Hanoi capital city, and a large hydroelectric reservoir area, so it has great potential for reservoir fishery development. The province has implemented policies to support and promote restructuring of the agricultural sector, as well as reservoir fisheries. There are currently over 20 businesses investing in fish cage farming on Hoa Binh lake.

He emphasised that Hoa Binh is moving towards effective and sustainable aquaculture that is adaptive to climate change and associated with tourism development. Therefore, solutions raised at the conference will help the province achieve this goal.

At the event, participants discussed the current status and solutions for developing reservoir fisheries; technical and technological solutions in breeding and aquaculture on reservoirs; aquatic resources in Hoa Binh lake area; and tourism development on the lake associated with fishery economy development.

Tien stressed the need for orientations for reservoir fishery development, and requested localities to investigate, survey and evaluate aquaculture potential and develop reservoir fisheries, matching each ecological region. He affirmed that Hoa Binh is one of the five provinces with great potential in this field.

He asked localities with reservoirs to continue building mechanisms and policies to attract and create conditions for businesses to invest in breeding, processing and consumption of products for reservoir fish farmers.
