Hanoi’s first urban railway line between Cat Linh and Ha Dong is scheduled to come into operation in the fourth quarter of 2018 after years of delays due to a funding shortage.

To date, 95% of the construction work has been completed and all of the line’s 13 trains have been delivered to Vietnam, said Vu Hong Phuong, deputy head of the Transport Ministry’s management unit for railway projects.

He added that 80% of the necessary equipment has been imported for installation and the final work is being done.

Construction of the 13.5 kilometre line began in 2011 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2016 but has since been delayed several times.

The cost of the project has also risen from US$552 million to US$886 million, funded by Chinese official development assistance.

Phuong said the additional capital has been disbursed by China EximBank and the contractor is finalising the 12 stations so that a trial run can begin in September.

Once operational, trains will run every two minutes, serving the districts of Ha Dong, Thanh Xuan and Dong Da.

In addition to the Cat Linh-Ha Dong Line, the Nhon-Ha Noi Station Line, Hanoi’s second metro line, is under construction and scheduled for completion in 2021.
