Van Don Airport in the northern province of Quang Ninh is nearing completion and is expected to welcome its first flight in December this year, announced the company in charge of construction.

Sun Group stated that the air traffic control tower will be completed this month, while the passenger terminal is scheduled for completion in August, adding that test flights will begin in July.

In addition, next month the company plans to submit a report to the central government seeking approval for the opening of the airport in December.

Construction of Van Don Airport began in 2015 and is undertaken by Sun Group, the strategic investor of Quang Ninh province.

The airport has a 3.6-kilometre long runway and a parking area which can accommodate at least six planes. Its annual capacity is 2-2.5 million passengers until 2020, before being upgraded to facilitate 5 million passengers in 2030 and parking spaces for 12 aircraft.

In the meantime, an area for handling cargo is placed inside the passenger terminal, while a dedicated cargo terminal will be built by 2030 which will be able to handle 51,000 tonnes of goods a year.

The airport and its facilities will cover a total area of 326 hectares.
