(HBO) – Since 2016, the Women’s Union in Lac Thuy district has organised public-awareness-raising sessions on various topics, from women’s involvement in production value chain and distribution of safe products to health insurance for communal health. The sessions also discussed issues related to population, environmental protection, and building cultural life at residential areas. They have drawn the participation of thousands of members of the union.

The union also mobilised local support to build two rural roads in
Lien Hong 2 village of Khoan Du commune, and in Soc Bai village of Yen Bong
commune, whose total cost exceeded 195 million VND.
Particularly, in Phu Thanh commune, which is aiming to earn recognition
as a new-style rural area in 2018, the union launched a campaign of building
new-style rural villages and exemplary families in line with environmental
protection. In the campaign, 11 villages and 20 families in Soi village signed a
commitment pact to participate in the campaign. Local women’s unions assisted
the installation of lights along 4km of roads at a total cost of more than 30
million VND. The unions have also organized groups of women to keep the local
roads clean by regularly sweeping the roads, placing 25 garbage bins in public
places. The women also dug 80 garbage holes at home, planted trees and flowers
along 8.8km of roads and constructed 1,000 standard latrines. The union has
mobilised its members to donate 8,800 m2 of land, nearly 692 million VND, and
5,610 working days to build rural roads, school yards, irrigation canals and
communal houses, contributing to local efforts to meet standards of a new-style
rural area.
As part of its campaign on encouraging women to help one another
make a living and reduce poverty, the union’s chapters at different levels have
continued to persuade women to join collectives. The union has established one
new collective, eight cooperative groups, and eight production chains in animal
husbandry and farming, including production value chains across eight communes that
grow safe vegetables, chilies, and pumpkins, with total plantation amounting to
12.5 hectares. The union provided guidance for the cooperative groups to sign
contracts with the Northern Green JSC to ensure the sale of their products. The
cooperation model now generates between 7 and 8 million VND of production value
per 360m2. In 2018, nine communes and towns have joined a production chain to
grow high quality Bac Huong 9 aromatic rice on 100 hectares. Currently, the district’s
women’s union is collaborating with the local Department of Agriculture and
Rural Development to organise nine training sessions for 685 local farmers on
rice cultivation techniques./.
