(HBO) - With more than 1,000 square meters of rice fields to get only enough food, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong, in Giang village, Binh Thanh commune, Cao Phong district, has shifted to produce aromatic herbs to supply for Hoa Binh city market. This not only creates jobs for the family members but also for stable income 2-3 times more than rice plantation.
From the sloping land, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong
lowered the land, renovated to grow herbs in the off-season to get the income
2-3 times more than rice.
Three years ago, Ms. Thuong got married,
leaving Hoa Binh City to her husband’s home in Giang village, Binh Thanh
commune. Seeing the conditions of living near the city and being convenient for
transportation, full of water and irrigation, she discussed with her husband to
transform over 1,000 m2 planting rice into plant herbs. Before marrying, her
family lived in Group 3, Dong Tien Ward, which has a tradition of planting herb
vegetables. Therefore, she has her own knowledge and experience, from the
beginning, Ms. Thuong planted good herb vegetables and selected the familiar
vegetables as perilla, marjoram, laksa leaves and basil. She planted, expanded
the area, and renovated the land. Up to now, she has planted more than 1,000
m2, creating jobs for two regular workers.
Unlike other kinds of vegetables, the herbs
are often picked up, fertilized and harvested by farmers. Ms Thuong calculates:
Although they often work in the field, the income is regular, suitable for
farmers. Especially the herbs in the market is not difficult to sell, only with
the higher or lower price. If there is stable outputs such as supplying for
restaurants, food stores, etc. daily with the stable prices, this is a
remarkable source of income for farmers.
With the area of Mrs. Thuong's family, in the
off-season every time, she collected about 20 kg, in the main season that was
40-50 kg of vegetables, providing for the market of Hoa Binh city. She said:
"In the past, the garden of aromatic herbs in Dong Tien Ward was the"
resource"of herbs in Hoa Binh City. However, in the past 2 years, this
area has been planned to build the urban area, As far as it is concerned, the
need to use herbs, especially in the city is increasing, so this is a good
opportunity for many farmers in the surrounding areas of the city, such as Binh
Thanh, Trung Minh, Dan Chu, Thong Nhat communes to develop aromatic herbs
plantation.
