HBO - Nine of the 11 communes and townships in Ky Son district, Hoa Binh province, have traditional medicine associations, accounting for 89 percent. Total members number 187, an increase of 74 people over 2013. Traditional medical practices have significantly contributed to public health care in the locality.

Herbalist Nguyen Thi Men in Dan Ha commune (Ky Son district) has inherited and developed her family’s remedies for kidney and lupus erythematosus diseases.

Nguyen Dinh Luong, Chairman of the Ky Son Traditional Medicine Association of Ky Son district, said traditional medical activities in the district have recorded certain developments in recent years. Ky Son has completed a system of health care facilities using traditional medicine from the district to grassroots levels. The district’s health care centre features a division for traditional medicine while 70 percent of communal-level clinics have carried out treatment using traditional medicine. Three private establishments practicing traditional medicine have also been licensed in Ky Son.

Some clinics have combined traditional medicine with modern one and gained good results. The number of patients coming to those establishments or herbalists’ houses to have check-ups and treatment has been increasing. They have reported health improvement when receiving traditional remedies for certain health problems like sciatica, headache, backache, insomnia, muscle pain and rheumatism.

Between 2014 and 2018, more than 109,000 patients were treated with traditional medications, and over 12,000 received treatment by non-drug therapies such as acupuncture, massage and acupressure massage.

To improve the quality of traditional medical practices, members of the Ky Son Traditional Medicine Association has often collected rare herbal plants and effective remedies. The association has also organised workshops and contests to find out precious traditional remedies to preserve.
