Being at the Department of Nutrition (the District’s Health Center) at the time when the staff of the Red Cross and the volunteers of the district’s Club of Kindness are busy ladling porridge, packing and delivering it to the patients and the family members standing in line. The majority of the patients are the poor and the households with difficult circumstances, the ethnic minorities, and those who are from the remote and isolated areas in the district. Ms. Pham Thi Phuong, the Chairman of the District’s Club of Kindness, says: "Among the patients who receive porridge, many of them are in very difficult circumstances. There are elderly patients with fatal disease and they do not have a place to live, their children are not responsible for taking care of them, and they lack meals. Receiving free meals, they line up early in the morning, everyone happily makes me and the people in the club excited, feeling like doing the meaningful and practical work”.

To have 2 hot pots of porridge every Monday morning, the members of the Club of Kindness prepare rice and food from the previous night, and together with the kitchen staff of the district’s Health Center to process so that they can deliver to the patients early in the morning. The materials are carefully checked, ensuring nutrition and food hygiene and safety, each time they give them to over 100 patients. The warmth is not only in the hot porridge in hand, but it is also in the hearts of the members and volunteers of the Club of the Kindness.

"The foster-brother”, Mr. Tran Van Duc, a member of the Club of Kindness, who is in charge of shopping and preparing food, says: "The fund for buying rice and food are deducted from the club's funds, mobilized by members or self-contributed. To facilitate the personal work, everyone can participate fully in activities, each member assigns themselves, taking turns weekly to prepare, pack and distribute food. Since then, everyone feels the patient's difficulties, creating more motivation to continue to implement the program”.

Welcoming the hot porridge, Mr. Bui Van Hoan from Thanh Hoi commune says: "Having long-term treatment at the hospital while the situation is difficult, my family members cannot take care of me regularly. Besides the set of hot porridge, I also receive the encouragement from everyone in the club, which made me very touched, more motivated to treat the disease”.

The porridge distribution program has been implemented monthly by the district’s Club of Kindness since 2017. Realizing the positive effect from the activity, the frequency has gradually increased from once every two weeks regularly to every Monday morning. Since 2020, the club has distributed over 5,000 porridge packages to the poor patients who are under the treatment, with a total value of over 50 million VND. The district’s Red Cross also prepares nutritious meals for the patient. In order for the program to be maintained regularly, the district’s Red Cross and the Club of Kindness have developed a plan to propagate, mobilize and call on the local officials and people to donate and support; list up the number of patients with difficult circumstances, inpatient and home treatments to visit and encourage them. Thanks to that, in addition to the hot porridge servings, the patient also receives monthly care and the supportive treatment costs from philanthropists.

The program of free rice and porridge distribution at the district’s Health Center is a meaningful activity with the deep humane, spreading the spirit of "mutual love”, "The leaves protect tattered ones", sharing difficulties, bringing joy to the poor and disadvantaged patients. At the same time, it has been raising the people's awareness of humanitarian and charitable activities, contributing to the implementation of the social security policies in the locality.
