Hang Kia commune in Mai Chau district is home to H’Mong people. A month prior to the traditional Tet festival (Lunar New Year), along paths to the commune are plum gardens with white flowers blooming in the morning mist and gentle sunlight, turning the whole area vividly bright in early spring.

The pure white of plum blossoms in the mountains of the northwest region creates a charming landscape, bringing hope for a prosperous and happy new year ahead. The beauty not only charms the locals but also fascinates many tourists near and far.

Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of crowded streets in big cities, many youngsters choose to come to the mountainous areas to capture exquisite moments of the plum and peach trees or with local children.

In recent years, the life of local H’Mong ethnic people has seen a great facelift, especially traffic infrastructure with roads were concreted, making transportation easier to far-flung hamlets.

Besides, several sports fields, cultural houses and other public works were built, helping attract more visitors to Hang Kia to experience unique tourism activities such as "clouds hunting”, mountain climbing, or immersing themselves in rich cultural characteristics as well as interesting community tourism services of the locality.

Giang A La, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Hang Kia Agricultural and Tourism Service Cooperative, said that his cooperative was established with 11 member households. With support and guidance of local authorities, the cooperative has developed homestay tourism and other tourism products such as picking and plant fruits, painting beeswax, clouds-hunting, pounding Day (glutinous) cakes, visiting fruit orchards, among others to lure visitors.

In 2020, Hang Kia’s community tourism was recognised by the Provincial People's Committee as a 4-star OCOP (One Commune, One Product) product, which has contributed to affirming the prestige and quality of a safe and friendly destination.

With existing potentials, provincial, district and local authorities have been accompanying locals to develop community tourism models, providing skills in hospitality to them in order to diversify tourism experiences for visitors.

Efforts by the local administration have helped turn Hang Kia to become an attractive tourist destination, creating more sustainable livelihoods for people, stabilising lives of the locals, developing socio-economic, repelling backward customs, and building rich and beautiful and civilised villages./.
