Addressing the closing ceremony, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan said that the session completed the set agenda with many important contents.

During the session, deputies elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong as the new President of Vietnam.

The NA approved the proposal by the Prime Minister regarding members of the cabinet.

The NA adopted nine laws and debated six other bills.

Particularly, the NA approved the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and related documents with high consensus, making Vietnam the seventh country to ratify the deal.

The NA Chairwoman highlighted that the sixth session is the NA’s yearend meeting, during which the mid-term implementation of NA resolutions on socio-economic development and State budget was reviewed.

Despite difficulties and challenges, the socio-economic situation in 2018 and the last three years has sustained comprehensive growth. The restructuring of the economy showed positive outcomes with all targets reached and exceeding expectations, she noted, adding that defence and security have been firmly safeguarded and the position of Vietnam in the region and the world has risen.

The NA leader lauded efforts of the Government and the effective coordination of the whole political system, the business community and the entire society in the country’s achievements recorded in 2018 and the past three years, while pointing out shortcomings for timely solutions.

During the session, the NA monitored the implementation of the legislature’s resolutions on thematic supervision and question-and-answer sessions since the beginning of the tenure, said Chairwoman Ngan.

The NA acknowledged efforts and responsibility of the Government, the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuracy and ministries and agencies in performing their assigned tasks.

The deputies cast confidence votes on officials holding positions elected or approved by the NA, Ngan said, highlighting the significance of the votes in objectively assessing the performance of the officials.

The top legislator also stressed the higher quality of the sixth session with debates taking place in a democratic and responsible environment, attracting the attention of people and voters nationwide.

The meeting’s outcomes have helped consolidate solidarity and consensus needed to complete tasks set for the next year and the 2016-2020 tenure, she said.

Prior to the closing, the deputies voted to approve the Law on amendments and supplements to laws including regulations related to planning; the revised Law on Corruption Prevention and Control; and the revised Law on People’s Public Security Forces.

At the closing session, the deputies adopted a resolution of the sixth session.
