Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a ceremony in Hoa Binh province’s Da Bac district on April 13 to launch an emulation campaign to do away with makeshift and ramshackle houses across the country.

PM Chinh, along with other Party, State, and provincial leaders, presented gifts and attended the ground-breaking of six houses for the poor in Cao Son, communes of Da Bac district.

The event, jointly held by the Central Emulation and Commendation Council and the Presidium of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, attracted the participation of Acting State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan, President of the VFF Central Committee Do Van Chien, Secretary of the Hoa Binh provincial Party Committee Nguyen Phi Long, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Bui Duc Hinh, and Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Council Bui Van Khanh, among others. The ceremony was also connected online to the 63 provinces and centrally-run cities.

Addressing the launching ceremony, PM Chinh, who is also Chairman of the council, acknowledged the results of the work concerning temporary and dilapidated houses over the past years, but noting that currently, there are still over 315,000 households classified as poor or near-poor who need housing assistance, mainly in far-flung, border, and island areas.

He called for the mobilisation of resources from the State, society, businesses, and citizens; and stressed the need for effective mechanisms and policies and the assurance of quality of the construction, serving the right beneficiaries and ensuring transparency and efficiency without corruption and wastefulness.

Furthermore, the leader also recommended the establishment of a fund to do away with substandard houses across the nation.

Responding to the VFF Central Committee President’s appeal, Chairman of the Hoa Binh People’s Committee Bui Van Khanh stressed the province’s determination to complete the work by 2025.

At the event, 14 organisations, businesses, and individuals pledged to donate a total of 376 billion VND (14.8 million USD), a sum enough to construct 7,520 new houses. The first allocation of funds will prioritise 40 provinces with high poverty rates.

Following the ceremony, PM Chinh, along with other Party, State, and provincial leaders, presented gifts and attended the ground-breaking of six houses for the poor in Cao Son, Tu Ly, Hien Luong, and Toan Son communes of Da Bac district.
