Ronaldo brace puts Juventus on brink of another title

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, the first a penalty awarded for handball, to give Juventus a 2-1 win over Lazio which put them on the brink of a ninth successive Serie A title on Monday (Jul 20).

Juventus, with 80 points, are eight clear of Inter Milan with four games each to play followed by Atalanta on 71 and Lazio fourth on 69. Only one point behind Juve when the season restarted, Lazio have lost four of their last five games after being ravaged by injuries.

* The Copa Libertadores, South America’s equivalent of the Champions League, is to restart on Sep 15 after a six-month hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the South American Football Confederation said on Monday. Four group ties will take place on Sep 15, followed by five a day later and another seven on Sep 17.

* Wolverhampton Wanderers reclaimed sixth place in the Premier League as they beat a woefully out-of-form Crystal Palace 2-0 at Molineux on Monday thanks to goals by Daniel Podence and Jonny. * A crunch Spanish second division match between Deportivo La Coruna and Fuenlabrada was postponed on Monday after several Fuenlabrada players tested positive for coronavirus, the Spanish league said in a statement. * Brighton and Hove Albion made sure of avoiding relegation from the Premier League after a 0-0 home draw with Newcastle United on Monday sent them clear of the drop zone with one game remaining. * Sheffield United's Europa League qualification hopes took a hammer blow after a second-half goal from Richarlison guided visitors Everton to a 1-0 win in their Premier League clash on Monday. The result leaves United eighth in the table on 54 points from 37 games, two points behind seventh-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, who host Crystal Palace later on Monday.

* Leganes have parted ways with coach Javier Aguirre following their relegation from La Liga, the Spanish club said on Monday. Leganes, who took the relegation battle to the final day, suffered the drop following their 2-2 draw with title winners Real Madrid on Sunday.

* The Russian illustrator who designed Misha, the mascot of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, died on Monday aged 84, a publisher of children's books said. Viktor Chizhikov, a children's book illustrator, is best known for having created Misha, a brown bear sporting a belt in the colours of the five Olympic rings, for the Moscow Games.

* Qatari side Al Sadd have reached an agreement to sign Santi Cazorla after the Spanish midfielder confirmed his departure from La Liga side Villarreal, the Qatar Stars League club announced on Monday. Cazorla, 35, played his final game for Villarreal on Sunday as they ended their league campaign with a 4-0 win over Eibar to finish fifth in the standings and secure Europa League qualification.

* The Ballon d'Or will not be awarded this year for the first time in its 64-year history after the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on the football calendar, organisers France Football magazine said on Monday.

* Yum China Holdings Inc was named as an official retail food services sponsor for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the KFC operator in China said on Monday. Yum China's brands, including KFC and Pizza Hut, will be on site at the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.

* Birmingham City midfielder Jude Bellingham has joined Germany's Borussia Dortmund on a "long-term" contract, the Bundesliga club said on Monday. British media had reported earlier this month that the 17-year-old, who was a target for Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, had signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga side for about £26 million pounds (US$32.73 million).
