(HBO) – The farmers’ movement on production and trade for sustainable poverty reduction has been launched by chapters of the Hoa Binh provincial Farmers' Union for several years, with positive results.

Many farming households in Cu Yen commune, Luong Son district, have invested in commercial-scale poultry farming models to improve their economic situation.

Farmer Vu Van Thai from Dai Dong hamlet, Ngoc Luong commune, Yen Thuy district, is an example of successful entrepreneurship that many locals are familiar with. With a diligent and hardworking nature, along with the unwavering support of various chapters of the district Farmers' Union, he has set up a pomelo cultivation model spanning around 1 ha.

With the support of the district and commune-level Farmers' Unions chapters since 2012, farmers in the hamlet have actively transformed their crop structures, learned practical experience to develop a pomelo cultivation model. Thanks to favourable soil and climate conditions, Dai Dong pomelos yield a bumper harvest almost every year. Buyers from neighbouring districts and provinces come directly to purchase the fruit from the orchard.

For Thai's family, after deducting expenses, they earn nearly 500 million VND (21,700 USD) in profit annually. While managing his orchard, he also spares time to engage in community activities and help poor farmers in the locality. His contributions have been honoured by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union with the title of 'Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer' in 2022.

Thai is one of the nearly 182,000 farmer union members who achieved the title of outstanding production and business households at various levels within the province during the 2018 - 2023 tenure.

Over the past five years, farmer unions at different levels in the province have partnered with enterprises to provide over 15,420 tonnes of fertilisers, held 1,136 training sessions, transferred sci-tech knowledge to nearly 66,000 members, provided credit from the Farmer Support Fund at all levels totaling 53.27 trillion VND for 9,945 household members with 754 models, and secured loans from three banks for more than 52,200 households with over 3.7 trillion VND.

Besides, they also have facilitated the sale of around 1,300 tonnes of agricultural products for farmer union members. During this term, the province has had 345,830 registered farmer union households, among which 181,933 have been recognised for achieving the title, accounting for 52.6% of the total registered households, with annual incomes ranging from under 500 million VND to over 1 billion VND.
