At present, Mai Chau district is remaining a lot of traditional sports,
such as stick pushing, tug of war, crossbow shooting and Tu Lu. These
traditional sports are actively attended by the local residents and become an
indispensable spiritual dish at big festivals like Gau Tao Festival, Village
Peace Praising Festival, Muong Peace Praising Festival. Every year, the prizes
of crossbow shooting, stick pushing, tug of war are preserved and organized to
select the excellent athletes for the provincial competition. In 2017, they are

In March, when the fog covers all the ways, the Mong people in
Mai Chau district usually organize Gau Tao Festival. The festival is taken
place in two communes of Hang Kia and Pa Co. At Gau Cao Festival, many traditional
sports are being preserved such as Tug of war, stick pushing, crossbow
shooting, especially Tu Lu – a favourite sport of Mong people which has great
relaxation and help keeping health by easily and simply participating with uncomplicated rules; therefore, anyone can
join in this game. This is the reason why it is attracted by many people and
becomes an indispensable spritual dish in Mong people’s daily life. The
district athletes of Tu Lu are selected by the province to attend the
competition of the Northern Area with high achievements. In addition, the
Village Peace Praising Festival , Muong Praising Festival are usually held with
many traditional sports of Thai ethnics such as spinning, pestle knocking in
Chieng Chau commune, Na Phon commune and Mai Chau town.
The preservation and promotion of these traditional ethnic
sports in Moc Chau district have faced a lot of difficulties. Talking to us
about this issue, Mr. Lo Van Tuan, the Director of Mai Chau cultural and sport
center said: The preservation and promotion of these traditional ethnic sports
is the policy of the Party Committee and the authorities of Mai Chau district.
These traditional ethnic sports is advocated to be developed at the festivals
to promote the ethnic cultural identities. Moreover, local people are
propagated to acttively practice sports and physical exercises, including some
ethnic sports.in every district- level or commune – level sport competition,
these ethnic sports must be included. Despite the careful attention of the
party committee and authority, the ethnic sports of Mai Chau district like
stick pushing, crossbow shooting and tug of war have not achieved high prizes
in the provincial competition.
With endless effort in preserving these ethnic sports, together
with the development of sport movements in general, Mai Chau district has
completed all the targets about sports and physical training. At present, there
are 14,640 people attending sports and physical training and 3643 regular
attendants, 228 sports and physical training clubs.
