Building model new-style rural residential areas and gardens aims to create a spacious rural appearance and infrastructure facilities, change production practices and improve the quality of life for people. The scheme also helps create a breakthrough in mindset and awareness of new rural construction.

The first impression upon visiting the model garden of Do Thi Thuy's family in Dai Dong hamlet, Ngoc Luong commune, is the sight of her pomelo orchard, which is ready for harvest.

Implementing the policy of building model gardens in the locality, in 2016, Thuy’s family planted one hectare of Dien pomelo and one hectare of green-skin pomelo, along with oranges and early-ripening pomelos, she said.

The family received technical advice related to planting and caring of pomelo. Since developing the model garden project, the trees have been grown and cared for organically so they grow well and bear fruits, and harvested products are sold immediately as soon as they are picked. The garden’s Dien pomelo products have been certified and exported to the UK and the US.

Kieu Ba Phuc, head of Dai Dong hamlet, said as the first unit to achieve the title of model new rural residential area in the commune, the appearance of Dai Dong residential area has been transforming daily. Inter-village roads are now spacious and paved with concrete, with flowers and ornamental plants planted along the roads.

Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Ngoc Luong commune said the locality was recognised as a new-style rural commune in 2015. In the 2021- 2025 period, the commune continues efforts to obtain the status of advanced new-style rural commune by the end of 2024. The commune has so far had 10 model new rural residential areas and 169 model gardens. It aims to have three more model new rural residential areas and 52 model gardens in 2024.

As of October 2024, Yen Thuy district had 39 model new rural residential areas and 383 model gardens.
