(HBO) – Lac Thuy district in the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh has recently organised a ceremony to announce the certificate on the protection of "Lac Thuy Orange” collective trademark.
The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Intellectual Property Department under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Centre for Agricultural Promotion. Nguyen Van Quang, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, and Hoang Van Tu, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Council were also present at the event.

Gardening, including orange planting, has become a major job in agricultural production in Lac Thuy district, contributing to generating jobs for 3,600 labourers, including 1,200 regular labourers and 2,400 seasonal ones who earn about 4 million VND per month. The total area of citrus trees is 996ha, of which 668ha is orange with nearly half of this area in the period of fruit bearing. Orange varieties are mainly Xa Doai (Doai Commune), V2 and Canh, with average productivity of 28.5 tonner per ha and an average price of 20,000-25,000 VND per kg. Of note, Lac Thuy orange is favoured thanks to its good quality and meeting food safety requirements. Promoting mass production of high quality orange is a strategy set by Lac Thuy district to build new-style rural areas, restructure agriculture and raise locals’ income.
At the ceremony, Nguyen Van Quang, Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said the event is significant to local socio-economic development, while offering an opportunity to promote the product as well as the locality’s favourable conditions for agricultural production.
He underlined the need for all-level Party Committees, authorities, officials and people in the district to focus on protecting and developing the trademark in a long-term and sustainable manner.
Provincial departments and agencies, and district leaders should guide localities how to protect and develop orange plants in particular and citrus trees in general, he said.
Quang also urged district leaders to heed managing the trademark and improving the awareness of managing, using, protecting and upholding trademark values of Lac Thuy orange among local farmers.
At the same time, it is necessary to zone off orange planting areas and pay attention to ensuring the quality of seedlings and especially food safety from production to distribution of the fruit, he said.
