(HBO) – Recently, strong heat waves have hit the northern region with some areas recording temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. To avoid the hot weather’s negative impacts on health and also to make use of the strong sunlight, which is favourable for rice to ripen and dry grains, farmers across Hoa Binh province are going to paddy fields from 4 - 5am every day to harvest the winter - spring crop.

Farmers in Vinh Dong commune of Kim Boi district quickly harvest the winter - spring rice.

As one of the localities harvesting the winter - spring rice the earliest, Lac Thuy district has seen a busy atmosphere across its fields. Hoang Dinh Chinh, deputy head of the district’s agriculture and rural development division, said Lac Thuy farmers have harvested over 600ha of the winter - spring rice so far, equivalent to 40% of the plan. This year’s winter - spring rice is assessed as a bumper crop. The district is set to have completed harvesting all rice by June 10.

In the winter - spring crop of 2022 and 2023, 62,550ha of annual plants were grown in Hoa Binh province, including 16,475ha of rice, equivalent to 104.8% of the target.

District-level authorities have ordered specialised units to ask farmers to speed up and finish harvesting on schedule and make preparation for the summer - autumn crop. Harvesting has completed on some early grown rice areas and also started on the main-crop ones. Apart from rice, localities are also boosting the harvest of other crops like cassava, peanut, and vegetables while readying the supply of agricultural equipment, fertiliser, and seeds for the summer - autumn crop.

As of mid-May, more than 3,400ha of the winter - spring rice had been harvested in the province. Some localities have been harvesting early. Among them, Lac Thuy district has completed the work on over 67% of its rice farming area, Luong Son district nearly 50%, and Hoa Binh city over 40%.

In the winter - spring crop of 2022 and 2023, Hoa Binh province has large cultivation areas of many high-yield plants. Due to the complex situation of plant diseases and high input costs, since the crop’s beginning, localities have carried out concrete measures to obtain comprehensive results as requested by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

In addition, agricultural authorities have ordered localities to instruct farmers in implementing anti-drought and -disease measures for fruit, medicinal and perennial plants and other crops. They have also asked farmers to properly clean the fields on which harvesting already completed and make use of good weather conditions to prepare land for the summer - autumn crop./.
