(HBO) – A delegation of the Government’s Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs led by Hau A Lenh, member of the Party Central Committee and Minister, Chairman of the committee, recently had a working session with the Hoa Binh provincial People’s Committee to look into the implementation of ethnic minority policies in 2022, orientations and tasks for 2023, and the national target programme on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas for 2021 - 2025.

Minister, Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs Hau A Lenh speaks at the meeting.

In 2022, the provincial People’s Committee included nine tasks relevant to ethnic minority affairs in its work plan, issued some specific policies for ethnic minority areas, and effectively carried out policies on education - training, healthcare, and culture to boost socio-economic development and ensure defence - security in those areas.

To implement the national target programme on socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas for 2021 - 2025, Hoa Binh built a plan to allocate over 1.57 trillion VND (66.3 million USD) sourced from the programme. Of the sum, more than 274.53 billion VND has been allocated for development investment in 2022. The provincial People’s Committee has proposed the provincial People’s Council earmark 813.58 billion VND for programme implementation in 2023.

However, socio-economic conditions in ethnic minority and mountainous areas are still underdeveloped, and local residents still facing numerous difficulties in their life.

Nguyen Phi Long, alternate member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, recommended that to secure substantive and effective results in performing ethnic minority-related tasks, the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs should propose the Government continue devising mechanisms and policies on training, planning, and using personnel from ethnic minority groups; pay more attention to support policies for students in mountainous, remote, and disadvantaged areas; and improve the quality of local teachers.

He also called on the Government to provide more policies for developing livelihoods for ethnic minority people; press on with infrastructure and transport projects in those areas, especially arterial roads and those linking different localities; and effectively carry out forest and livelihood development policies in the areas.

Addressing the event, Minister, Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs Hau A Lenh highly valued Hoa Binh province’s efforts to carry out ethnic minority policies.

He asked the province to tackle difficulties, make focus-oriented investment in existing national target programmes, and engage the entire political system, all-level authorities, and sectors in the implementation.

The official also addressed some opinions of Hoa Binh and assigned his delegation’s members to summarise the province’s proposals to report to the Government and relevant ministries and sectors for settlement./.
