The Hoa Binh Elderly Association and the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs on May 7 held a working session with a visiting delegation from the Japanese Embassy and sponsors of a local project on reducing senior citizens’ income and health vulnerabilities in Vietnam (VIE071).
The delegation and sponsors visit and present gifts to an old woman cared for at home by the intergenerational self-help club in Hanh Phuc village, Hoa Son commune, Luong Son district.
The VIE071 is funded by the Japanese Government, through the World Bank, and implemented by the provincial association and HelpAge International in Vietnam from 2021 to 2024. The project has so far completed the establishment of 30 Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs (ISHCs) in six districts and cities. With eight activity areas, it has facilitated nearly 11,700 people indirectly. A total of 60 sessions of free consultation and health check-ups have been organised, with 115 cultural and sports groups established and effectively maintained. Nearly 200 people have been supported and cared for, while more than 80 million VND (3,200 USD) have been mobilised for social welfare activities.
The project aims to boost the participation of the elderly in income-raising activities as well as increase the use of social care and health services in communities through the ISHCs. It also aims to enhance the capacity of related personnel and relevant parties in establishing, managing, and replicating the club model, as well as supporting adaptation to the aging population trend.
At the working session, the delegates were briefed on some key tasks of the provincial association and the local situation of the aging population. Discussing difficulties and advantages of the project, participants assessed its impact on the general society and the elderly in particular, with solutions proposed to further expand the operation of the ISHCs.
Earlier in the morning, the working delegation visited and participated in activities at the ISHC in Hanh Phuc village, Hoa Son commune, Luong Son district. They presented gifts to elderly individuals cared for by club volunteers.
